An outrigger pad is a support surface placed beneath the outriggers or stabilizers of heavy equipment such as cranes, concrete pumps, bucket trucks, and utility vehicles. Its purpose is to distribute the machine’s weight over a larger area to help prevent sinking, shifting, or tipping during operation.

Outrigger pads are important because they improve stability and reduce the amount of ground pressure applied to the surface beneath the equipment. Without proper support, outriggers can sink into soft soil, asphalt, gravel, or uneven terrain, creating unsafe operating conditions and increasing the risk of equipment failure or overturning.

The formula for determining the correct outrigger pad size is: Required Area = Maximum Outrigger Load ÷ Allowable Ground Bearing Pressure. As a general guideline, outrigger pads

are often selected to provide three times the surface area of the outrigger shoe. However, using the formula above is recommended to verify the proper size for your application. For crane operations, it is also common practice to apply an additional safety factor by multiplying the final Required Area by 1.5 to 2.

Wood is a practical choice for short-term, light-duty utility work because it offers strong, rigid support at a relatively low cost. However, wood can absorb moisture over time, which increases its weight and may lead to rotting. Even with these drawbacks, its affordability often makes it a reliable option for many job sites, depending on the ground conditions.
