FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Different hardwood species offer varying levels of hardness, weather resistance, and appearance, allowing them to be used both indoors and outdoors. The most common uses for hardwood timber include heavy construction, dunnage in shipping and storage, and scaffolding.
Hardwood timbers used for shipping and dunnage can be treated by heat and fumigation to achieve ISPM15 compliance to prevent the spread of harmful pests and diseases through the international movement of wood products.
Heat treatment involves raising the internal core temperature of the wood to at least 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 minutes, and fumigation exposes the wood to pesticide gases to eliminate any pests that may be present.
Hardwood lumber comes from deciduous broadleaf trees, and the most commonly used species depend on the region and the intended application. Some of the more common options include oak, maple, cherry, birch, ash, walnut, and poplar. In the gulf coast region, you may also find sycamore, magnolia, and beech hardwoods.
